Cameron Hill is expecting breathtaking thrills when he drives his first Porsche laps around Australia’s most famous racetrack, Mount Panorama, for Round 7 of the Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup this weekend.
The Porsche races will support the iconic Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 endurance race, and while Hill has raced at the exhilarating circuit before, the Porsche will be by far the fastest car he has driven at the venue.
“Mount Panorama is the sort of track where any laps you can do are extremely valuable, so I’m fortunate to have competed in a couple of Toyota 86 Series rounds, along with a Bathurst 6 Hour and a 12 Hour,” Hill said.
“In the Carrera Cup car, there will be a lot of commitment and bravery required for a good lap time; across the top of the Mountain, it’s a fine margin between doing a blinding lap and having a massive shunt. Obviously our plan is to stay on the right side of that boundary.
“Fortunately, we have a 50-minute practice session on Thursday morning, which gives me a chance to build up my confidence and learn the best techniques to maximise the Porsche’s handling and performance characteristics.”
Hill and his independent family team have recovered well from their difficult start to the season, with strong results coming in the last two rounds of the championship.
“At Sydney Motorsport Park, we were within fractions of a second of the leaders and at Tailem Bend, we managed to run with the front pack all weekend even though we had never tested there,” he said.
“Bathurst is a track that always rewards the best drivers, those who are able to take calculated risks. If we can come up with some more top-five results, it would continue our trajectory of improvement,” Hill concluded.
