Canberra Racer Ready to Follow in Hero’s Footsteps

Cameron Hill says he is looking forward to following in the footsteps of Mark Webber when he competes at this weekend’s Formula 1 World Championship season-opening Australian Grand Prix, racing his Southern Star Truck Centre/Anytime Fitness Porsche 911 GT3 in the Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup support races.

The 21-year-old nominated the nine-time F1 Grand Prix winner as one of the racing drivers he most admires, and the recently-selected Porsche Michelin Junior driver will spend some time with Webber this weekend as part of the junior mentoring program.

“Having lived my whole life in Canberra, Mark was someone who I really respected – he was a Queanbeyan boy who made it all the way to Formula 1.

“As part of the Porsche Junior program, I get to talk to Mark this weekend, and I can’t wait to pick his brain and hear some stories from all his motorsport adventures.”

Hill finished ninth overall in the opening round of the Carrera Cup at Adelaide earlier in the month; apart from former Supercars racer Dale Wood, he was the highest-placed Porsche racing rookie, giving him and his small family team motivation to continue their improvement curve.

“It was a good way to start the season and we learned a lot, but I don’t go racing to come ninth – I want to be at the front of the field,” Hill said.

“We know we still have a lot to learn but the Albert Park circuit has much more generous run-off areas, which means I can push closer to the limits without such a high level of risk.

“At Adelaide, we finished the weekend a lot closer to the front of the field, pace-wise, than where we started the weekend, which shows we are improving… but we need to keep working hard and pushing the boundaries,” Hill concluded.

This weekend features four Carrera Cup races, one on each day of the event.
