Cameron Hill and his privately-run Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup team feel they have unlocked some speed ahead of Round 4 of the series at Darwin’s Hidden Valley circuit this weekend, following a productive test day in which a former series champion drove Hill’s car.
2014 Carrera Cup Champion and four-time Bathurst 1000 winner Steven Richards turned some laps in the Porsche 911 GT3 at Winton last week, and Hill said his feedback was valuable for the team.
“Steven obviously has a lot of experience driving all different types of cars, and achieving race victories and championships across a variety of categories.
“His contributions were highly respected – I learned a lot about driving technique and my team picked up some important knowledge on car setup.”
Hill said the Winton test, combined with another day at Sydney Motorsport Park, have given him a lot more confidence following a tough run in the last couple of events.
“As well as the support from Steven, we also received technical assistance from David McMillan from DNA racing, which put us on the right path.
“Obviously the Australian Grand Prix and Phillip Island rounds were difficult for us, but I’ve accumulated some good seat time with the testing we’ve been able to do in the meantime.
“Our pace this year has actually been quite strong relative to the front-runners, and the testing has given me a better understanding about how the car behaves in certain situations.”
This weekend’s Carrera Cup round features a couple of sprint races, followed by a longer 35 lap affair on Sunday.
“The long race on Sunday will probably be the most physically demanding race we do all year, because of Darwin’s heat and humidity,” Hill said.
“Driver fatigue will be a factor, so I’ve been training hard to ensure I’m well-prepared for it.”
