Cameron Hill has capitalised on a scorching start in today’s opening race for Round 8 of the Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup Australia at the Gold Coast 600, improving from seventh on the grid to finish in fifth place.
Hill gained two positions with his rapid launch, which he described as his most rapid since joining the category last year.
“That was the best race start I’ve ever made in a Porsche, the car just launched off the line and I was able to pass the two cars in front before we made it to the first chicane,” Hill said.
“After that, I settled into a rhythm – with the relatively high track temperature and longest distance of the weekend, I was very mindful of conserving tyres.
“I was able to maintain consistent lap times all the way through. Towards the end, I had to negotiate some lapped traffic, so at that point I concentrated on managing the margin to the cars behind.
“There’s still a bit for us to find in terms of ultimate pace to challenge the front-runners, and areas where I need to maximise the car’s performance, so we’ll make some refinements overnight and hopefully be in a position to challenge for the podium tomorrow.”
Tomorrow’s season-ending Carrera Cup races, both 17 laps, will be held at 8:45am and 1:40pm (9:45am and 2:40pm in NSW, ACT and Victoria).
