Cameron Hill has rated this weekend’s Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup Australia round at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway as a massive confidence boost for his team, following up his breakthrough Saturday race victory with a pair of third-place finishes in today’s races.
Hill said the weekend could have been even better, if not for a slight mistake during a Safety Car restart in Race 2 when he was leading.
“Yesterday, Michael Almond made a small error at the restart which allowed me to take the win; this time I just out-braked myself which cost me the win – it’s all good experience!” Hill said.
“Overall though, it’s been an excellent weekend – by far the best I’ve had in Carrera Cup so far.
“Qualifying on pole and winning the race yesterday was obviously the highlight, and we’ve proven to ourselves that we now have the pace to run right at the front.
“Since we came into the category, we’ve learned a lot and we’re still learning, but this weekend has validated all our hard work over the last 18 months.”
In addition to finishing third overall for the round, Hill was also the highest-placed of the drivers in the Porsche Michelin Junior Programme in all three races.
The weekend’s results have further established Hill’s reputation as one of Australia’s most naturally gifted racing drivers; he has now achieved pole positions and race victories in three different national circuit racing categories: Formula Ford, Toyota 86 Series and Carrera Cup.
The next Carrera Cup round is at a track where Hill has past experience and success: Townsville.
“Last time I raced in Townsville was in the Toyota 86 Series in 2017, and I was able to win both races. Carrera Cup hasn’t been there for quite a few seasons, so it will be a level playing field just like this weekend,” he said.
Hill’s CHE Racing Team will be back in action next weekend at South Australia’s Tailem Bend circuit, running cars for Tom Sargent and Lachlan Mineeff in the Australian Formula Ford Championship.
