Cameron Hill has thoroughly enjoyed his guest appearance in the Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 Racing Series at Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend, despite some challenging weather conditions in the second and third races.
Driving the Neal Bates Motorsport-prepared 86 race car, Hill qualified 10th before improving to fifth in the opening race.
The Canberra driver’s forward progress continued in the second race; he was running in fourth position before contact from another driver sent him spinning down the order and finishing 21st.
Worsening conditions and a series of incidents saw the bulk of the third race run under Safety Car conditions, but despite the limited green flag running, Hill was still able to improve to 13th.
“Overall it was a fun weekend, even though the weather for Sunday’s races wasn’t ideal,” Hill said.
“In qualifying, I didn’t quite maximise the green tyre because I was still reacquainting myself with the car at that stage, but I made some good progress in the first race.
“In the second race, I had a great battle with Warren Luff before we were both taken out in separate incidents.
“I was looking forward to charging through the field in race three but unfortunately there weren’t a lot of green flag laps. In the end, I was relieved just to bring the car home in one piece.”
Hill said the younger drivers in the series were consulting him for advice on how to best handle the difficult conditions.
“Many of the drivers in the 86 series haven’t raced in that sort of environment before, where the grip levels and visibility are both reduced,” Hill said.
“I gave them some pointers on how to best handle the wet weather, and how to adapt their technique to race safely in those situations.”
Hill is hoping for an improvement in the weather when he returns to his Porsche Carrera Cup car at Bathurst next week.
“We’ve had a few wet Porsche races this year, but I’m hoping for a nice, dry track at Bathurst,” he concluded.
