Cameron Hill has gone second and seventh in Friday’s two practice sessions for round three of the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup series in Townsville today.
Hill immediately topped the timing sheets early in practice one before frequently vaulting himself back up towards the top after new laps from other runners had displaced him. After the first 25 minutes of practice for the day, Hill was second and just 0.0118 seconds away from the fastest time of the session.
Practice two times were much harder to read, with many teams and drivers electing for different practice strategies. Some drivers took a new set of tyres towards the end of the session, which combined with an improving track saw them leapfrog those on older rubber. Hill essentially matched his time from practice one, finishing the session in seventh position and eight tenths shy of the new tyre laps that topped the time sheets.
“The track was very green in practice one, so there was a lot of time still out there and we weren’t pushing too hard,” said Hill.
“In terms of the track, nothing has changed since 2019 when we were last here but it certainly feels like the grip level is higher today, so we need to understand that.
“The track gripped up quite a bit for the second session, and we were probably a little bit behind the ball for pace. We’re not miles away, it’s extremely competitive as always so we just need to do a bit of work overnight.
“We know we have some areas to work on. My engineer and I have some ideas and hopefully that will find us some pace.”
Hill will look to extend his 130 point lead in the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Series on Saturday, when Qualifying and Race 1 take place.
