Cameron Hill produces solid points haul in Sydney

Cameron Hill has enjoyed a strong weekend behind the wheel of his Supaglass Chevrolet in Round 7 of the Repco Supercars Championship at the Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight.

With Supaglass Industries coming on board as his major partner for the event, Hill ended his home round at Sydney Motorsport Park with P11 in Saturday’s spectacular showing under lights and P15 in Sunday’s outing.

Hill showcased his pace early on in the weekend, going fifth fastest in Friday’s sole practice session before having his push lap impeded during Saturday morning’s qualifying session - reducing him to 19th for the third race in a row.

However, the Canberran continued a recent trend of charging up the field by once again overcoming a difficult qualifying session and guiding the Supaglass Chev up an equal-race high eight places to finish in 11th, courtesy of a good strategy.

Sunday’s extremely tight qualifying result was a little more representative of Hill’s pace as he was on track for a Top 10 Shootout berth, only to be pipped right at the end of the session, dropping to 14th.

And while he did manage to charge up the order once again during the race, having even led the field for a couple of laps, Hill eventually ran out of steam towards the end of the race, ultimately finishing the race in 14th.

Despite not finishing either race in the top 10 and remaining 16th on the standings, Hill still had a productive weekend as he scored more points than a handful of drivers above him to close the gap on the point-score.

The Repco Supercars Championship continues next month with the 2024 NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint on August 16-18.

“We had a good weekend for us in the Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight, where we had Superglass coming on board for the round again,” Hill said.

“We went really aggressive on Saturday night and we made a one-stop work to gain some track position and we ended up finishing 11th, which was a great result starting from a bit further back.

“Then on Sunday, we were thinking that maybe it wasn't going to work being a bit hotter. So we went to the two-stop, but I think we probably could have done the one-stop again because we've pretty much finished where we started.

“It was a good experience for me. The car was super fast in the races. The crew did awesome pit stops. A big thanks to the whole Matt Stone Racing team for a great weekend.”
