Cameron Hill has kicked off his 2020 Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup campaign with a third-place finish on the streets of Adelaide today, after a race-long battle inside the leading pack.

The Canberra driver qualified fifth, after he was unable to complete his final flying lap at full speed.

“Once again, the car was very strong and I set the fastest time in the first half of the session,” Hill said.

“We changed to our second set of tyres, and our pace was improving; I was on target to set my best time on the very last lap of the session, but I had to abort my run because a car had gone off at Turn 7.”

Hill ended the session fifth, but was elevated to fourth on the grid when another driver was penalised. A strong start enabled him to improve to third by the first corner, a position he held for the remainder of the race.

“Once I slotted into third, the rest of the race was straightforward; I was able to keep up with the top two, and even though I had pressure from behind, I had enough performance in reserve to fend off the attacks,” Hill said.

“Late in the race, the tyres started to lose their edge because of the hot air from the cars in front, so I was happy to bring the car home and bank a solid points haul for my 2020 title challenge.”

Race 2, over a slightly shorter 10-lap distance, will be held at 1:30pm tomorrow (2pm in the Eastern states).
