Canberra racing driver Cameron Hill is excited by the prospect of racing on his home turf within the next two years, after reports surfaced about the potential return of Australia’s most prestigious category, the Repco Supercars Championship, to the nation’s capital.

According to the reports, negotiations are well advanced for a new street circuit, based around Exhibition Park, and using a combination of public roads as well as internal streets within the park. If the proposed plans are ratified, the ACT could host the Supercars season finale as soon as 2023.

The Supercars Championship previously visited the ACT from 2000 to 2002, racing around a street circuit adjacent to Parliament House, on the southern side of Lake Burley Griffin. Hill recalls visiting the race as a five-year-old.

“Dad took me to the V8s when I was a kid – I don’t remember much, apart from Mark Skaife winning and it being freezing cold!” Hill said.

“When I heard about the plans for the new race, I was glad to hear they’re looking at making it the last round of the season when the weather is warmer.”

For Hill, who has amassed numerous race and round victories in national Formula Ford, Toyota 86 Series and currently leads the Porsche Carrera Cup standings, the prospect of racing in front of his home crowd is a tantalising one.

“I have no doubt a revitalised Canberra Supercars event would attract a massive audience,” he said.

“The thought of being able to race in front of a home crowd is very motivating! Hopefully I will be in a position to potentially put a local on the podium. I’m focusing on trying to get a full-time Supercars Championship drive in in the next year or two, and I think it would be a special feeling to represent Canberra on the main stage.”

In the meantime, Hill continues to focus on his Carrera Cup exploits, although they are currently on hold due to COVID-19 lockdowns and border restrictions.

“While it’s frustrating to have another interrupted season, I’m not complaining considering how well our season started,” he said.

“We’re sitting in a really good position on top of the championship standings, so I hope we get a chance to complete the season.”
