Debut weekend provides highs and lows for Cameron Hill

It was a promising weekend for Cameron Hill in his first appearance on the Dunlop Super2 Series grid, driving the #111 Supaglass Industries Triple Eight Race Engineering Holden Commodore at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Hill signalled his transition from Porsche Carrera Cup Australia to the second tier Dunlop Super2 Series was seamless as he identified following his initial test with the team by placing third in opening practice.

Conditions at Sydney Motorsport Park provided many challenges due to the changeable conditions, however Hill was undeterred as he replicated third place in the second practice session to round out Friday on a high.

Straight into qualifying Saturday, Hill finished an interrupted session in a credible seventh as he beat out a host of experienced drivers to set him up for a strong run for the opening race.

The opening race failed to get any continuation due to safety car interruptions, but Hill managed to stay out of trouble to hold seventh and in turn gained a solid haul of points.

After a deluge of rain earlier on Sunday morning, Dunlop Super2 kicked off Sunday’s proceedings and Hill enjoyed the mixed conditions to qualify third for the afternoon’s final race.

Making the best start of the front two rows, Hill emerged out of Turn 1 alongside his teammate in second, however contact at the second corner dropped him to the back of the field. Requiring two trips to pit lane for repairs, he recovered to finish 10th capping off a solid debut.

Hill will make his second category start at Wanneroo, Western Australia in support of the Bunnings Trade Perth SuperNight on April 30-May 1.

“It was a case of what could have been in the last race,” said Hill.

“I got a rocket ship start off P3 and was challenging Declan (team-mate Fraser) for the lead into Turn 2 and then got absolutely centre punched from behind before some more contact when I was stationary put us right to the very back.

“We pitted to check the car and got back out there. I think I passed 10 or 12 cars and got back to 10th.

It was a big shame, it’s been a big weekend of learning for me to qualify so well today and to get off the line was a big achievement, but unfortunately sometimes things don’t go your way.

“We know we’ve got a good car, the team is awesome and I’m looking forward to Round 2.”
