Cameron Hill targeting further gains at The Bend

Truck Assist Racing’s Cameron Hill will draw on recent experience when he arrives at The Bend Motorsport for the next round of the Repco Supercars Championship this weekend.

Hill is one of a few drivers in the field to test a Gen3 Supercar at the circuit having completed a day early in the season, and another just two weeks ago, straight after the Sydney Motorsport Park event.

Momentum continues to build for Hill after qualifying strongly in Sydney highlighted by a top 10 berth for the SuperNight race and out-qualified his team-mate for Sunday’s event.

Race pace was also strong as Hill sat comfortably inside the top 10 for the first half of both races, particularly for Sunday’s contest, but a delayed wheel change due to a wheel nut problem cost him a strong result.

Having recent experience at The Bend in his Gen3 Truck Assist Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be of benefit after a trouble-free run during Hill’s most recent trip there.

It’s also another circuit where Hill has achieved success at having clean-swept the round in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia during a title winning streak of seven race victories in a row during 2021.

Hill is predicting a fast event and tyre degradation will be better than at Sydney Motorsport Park leading to some exciting battles to come.

The Bend Motorsport is the final sprint round prior to the endurance events at Sandown and Bathurst where Hill will be joined by Jaylyn Robotham, who recently completed a ride day with the team post-Sydney.

Another two-day meeting, The Bend Motorsport Park welcomes Supercars on August 19-20 as practice kicks off proceedings at 10:20am AEST.

“We didn’t get the race results in Sydney that we were after, but the qualifying speed was really strong,” said Hill.

“To make the top 10 in Saturday’s knock out format was really cool and to be right up there under lights with the drivers at the very top was awesome.

“We just need to keep making sure we have the car in the window and if I extract everything out of it there’s no reason we can’t continue those performances in qualifying.

“Sydney was a juggling act for tyre degradation. I think in Saturday’s race, I went a bit hard in the first stint and not hard enough in the second half, so there’s definitely an art to driving as fast as you can for as long as you can.

“I don’t think we’ll see the tyre degradation as powerful at The Bend, but that’s not to say it won’t be there as you can still hurt the tyres, I think the pace will be very high there you won’t be able to keep as much up your sleeve.

“I swept the weekend there in 2021. It’s a great track, I really like it. The Bend is fast and flowing, so it’ll be interesting to see how Gen3 goes there as there’s not as much reliance on aero leading to some good battles.

“I think Gen3 has shown to put on good racing and that’s the main thing.”
