It was a challenging weekend at Shell V-Power Motorsport Park for Cameron Hill for the latest round of the Repco Supercars Championship, but one where lessons learnt will provide a base for the endurance races to come.
A recent test at the South Australian venue didn’t translate the same track conditions as what were experienced during last weekend’s event, but the Matt Stone Racing team persevered to end Sunday in a good set-up window.
Four sessions on Saturday comprising two practice outings, qualifying and a race ensured a rapid day of action with Hill placing 17th and 11th in the respective practice sessions. In qualifying Hill made it to the second stage in 17th, missing a shot at the top 10 by 0.217s.
Hill was an innocent party in an opening corner incident in Race 20, with his Truck Assist Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 taking a hit to the front after being turned around, requiring the Matt Stone Racing crew to stay until midnight to effect repairs.
Rolling out for Sunday, Hill struggled for grip through the back-to-back qualifying sessions for Races 21 and 22. Qualifying in 22nd and 23rd.
Early contact was made at the start of Race 21 as Hill was again forced to avoid an opening lap incident on the way to 20th.
Some gains were made heading into the final race of the weekend as Hill enjoyed some rigorous battles to finish 19th.
Hill now prepares to be joined by Super2 race winner Jaylyn Robotham in his Truck Assist Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for the first endurance of the season as the Penrite Sandown 500 returns to the Repco Supercars Championship calendar on September 15-17.

“It wasn’t really the weekend we were hoping for,” said Hill
“We had tested here a couple of weeks ago and we thought, ‘yep, we’ve got this thing really sorted’, but we came out here this weekend to a track that was so different to what we were expecting. We just chased our tail this weekend, but I feel like we made some improvements in the final race, but by then it’s all too late.
“Lessons learnt, we’re onto the next one at Sandown for the first of the endurance races and I’m really looking forward to partnering Jaylyn, my co-driver.
“Thanks again to my team for fixing her up after Saturday’s bump and we’ll bounce back stronger at the next one.”
